Credit Repair Scams – How to Avoid Disaster
December 7, 2009
No doubt you’ve heard stories about people who have gone to credit repair organizations for help to improve their credit score, but have instead been ripped off by credit repair scams. So that you can understand what pathway to take to avoid being taken in by such unscrupulous people|these scammers|these crooks}, you must be aware of how they function.
They know that those unfortunate enough to be undergoing financial hardship are in such desperation as to swallow whatever is told them, in the hope that these fake agencies are really able to lead them out of financial despair, so they can reclaim their lives. They in many cases are so disheartened by the system, which is downright cruel to those who have poor credit, that they’ll do anything to get relief.
Most of those looking for help are close to bankruptcy, or at least contemplating it. These are the people who are the easiest targets of credit repair scams.
The reason? Because they are impatient, and are unable to internalize the fact that the process of repairing a credit report takes at least 6 – 12 months. Very often, these people feel that they don’t have much time, and unless they act right now, disaster awaits them in the future. Ironically, when they hire such unscrupulous agencies instead of ridding themselves of debt, they will lose whatever little money they still had, since they’ve been chasing a mirage.
Beware of these red flags so you can avoid credit repair scams:
1. They promise impossible results – lots of these agencies promise to get every negative trade line deleted from your credit report. They will guarantee you that your credit score will improve within the next 2-3 months.
They attempt to do this by disputing every adverse accounts in your report. The credit bureaus may initially remove some or most of the disputed items that can’t be verified within the required 30 days. In the meantime, it will seem that this fraudulent agency has delivered on its promise.
But if the credit reporting agencies can verify the negative accounts at a future date, they’ll go back on the credit report – plus you will have earned the reputation of being a hustler!
2. They tempt you to bend the rules – they will employ illegal tactics, such as using the identity of others to increase your overall credit, by offering to give you a new SSN, so that you can “start your financial life over.”
Warning! Such tactics could put you in hot water. It’s not only against the law to take up a “new” SSN, the number could have a police record attached to it, or any such things that will be much worse than bad credit.
3. They ask for full payment up front – these credit repair scams are characterized by the fact that they ask for full payment before any services have been rendered. This makes sense, because they will be worried that you will soon discover that that they can’t deliver as quickly as they claimed. And at that point, you would understandably be reluctant to pay their fees.
It’s entirely possible to avoid credit repair scams. Just keep in mind that no matter how desperate your situation, don’t ignore the warning signs!
